What is Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage and its Origins...
Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage is a unique, flowing, energetically vibrant yet deeply relaxing whole-body massage.
Your practitioner uses hands and forearms in long fluid strokes of varying intensity and rhythm up and down and all around the body, front and back of the body.
The flow also incorporates stretches, under-body work, deep tissue techniques and sound vibration.
The energising effects of these stimulating movements and creative techniques are combined with clear healing intent and invocations (through chant, singing, toning or voiced prayer) for positive transformation on all levels.
The radiant quality of Ka Huna touch communicates love, awareness, balance and compassion.
Origins of Lomi Lomi
In Hawaiian culture, a “Kahuna” is the keeper of ancient knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
These “Kahuna’s” are more than just wise people, medicine men or shamans. They are the “Master Professional” in their chosen field – be it Healing, Teaching, Counselling, Astrology, Science or anything they choose to be focused on. The word Ka Huna (two words) means “the light” (Ka) and “secrets” (Huna). This doesn’t mean secrets as in keeping secrets; it means the knowledge and wisdom that is beyond what we can see in our everyday lives.
Ka Huna Lomi massage was created by the master massage practitioners. The massage was designed to be the pinnacle of loving, healing touch and was used as a method of personal development, healing, rites of passage, and spiritual discipline. Ka Huna massage is often referred to as “temple style massage” – which is all about honouring your body as a temple. It has been passed down through generations of families and is now taught widely across the world.
As the massage has been handed down through families for generations, what you will find is that each area of the Hawaiian Islands has developed its own particular style of the massage – much the same as there are many different accents to the English language.
Everywhere you go it will be slightly different in its application, although the understanding behind it is very similar. Yet the general consensus from our clients all around is that it’s the "Best massage I've ever had!"
The philosophy of Lomi Lomi as we share it is partially based on the Seven Principles of Huna (as taught by Serge Kahili King) –
Ike, Kala, Makia, Manawa, Aloha, Mana and Pono
This information will be included in the course for a better understanding of the philosophy of the treatment.
Thank you for the opportunity to present this beautiful modality to those therapists and people interested in the Hawaiian bodywork.
Aloha (go with wellness) & Mahalo (from all of our being, we thank you),
Patricia and Jenn
